What Freedom Is

We all say that we want freedom, just like we all say that we want happiness, whatever that is for each of us. It is a simple word; yet the uses we make of it vary so much that what one may convey with it in a particular context may be exactly the opposite which another may ascribe its meaning to. For instance, many equate democracy with freedom; others equate democracy with mob rule which negates personal freedom. Many people presume that government militaries fight for freedom; others understand that it is government and military and police that they want freedom from. So, there is freedom for and freedom from - there is also political freedom, economic freedom, personal freedom and many other freedoms - is there perhaps something more pure and more basic that is just plain freedom?

The big dilemma with defining 'Freedom' is in placing its limits. After all, we can't have total freedom in every or perhaps even any context of our lives, can we? Where does one's rightful freedom end and encroachment upon another's freedom begin? And how to resolve differences of viewpoint and enforce those decisions? Is it true, as many presume, that there would be absolute chaos, without at least some somehow externally imposed limits?

Where is the right balance between freedom and safety or security? And is it necessary to sacrifice one to have enough of the other?

The objective of the following (in progress) is to clarify what freedom really is, rightfully for all individuals, because dictionaries and common usages leave much haziness and many unanswered questions about it; and, we need to know whether we deserve it and want it, in whole or merely in part.

1. Freedom means no government, no laws, no prisons, no militaries and no police.

Obviously. What else could possibly impose upon anyone's personal freedom? Without government, we would be free.

Other than humans, all of nature is free. Without licenses, permits or tolls, birds fly to whatever trees they want to. Dolphins continuously cavort in the vast ocean, fully utilizing always at least three dimensions, tax free, without challenge from any external authority for over a millenia of milleniums. Their complex societies are not in chaos; nor are any others' in this entire world; other than, of course, humans, and we're the only ones stuck with government.

Human governments always purport to protect, but always merely control as completely as they can, which is exactly the opposite of freedom. Contrary to popular opinion; neither governments nor their police nor militaries are there or have ever been there to protect the liberty of people.

It's as simple as that. So as you know, all those emails you get on Memorial Day and the 4th of July (and many other days of the year) extolling the heroism of our veterans and how grateful we should be for them are pure nonsense. No government soldiers have ever fought for freedom. They have only ever fought for the elite who own and control the forces of all sides, who always plan, fund and execute both sides of every conflict for their own ends, which always include further restricting people's liberties, in addition to killing many of them.

My God, in the 20th Century, by media acknowledged wars alone, governments killed at least a quarter of a billion people. This figure doesn't count any and/or all those killed by manufactured diseases, artificial environmental disasters and/or evil, government supported institutions like the AMA or the FDA or the IRS (how many have suicided because of IRS onslaught?) as well as all the various levels of police forces and unfortunately much else.

Jail is nothing more than institutionalized crime.

Only God's or Nature's laws are righteous and valid; not requiring contract and/or consent. (See: Law = Contract.) Certainly, we are free to trade away our God given rights in exchange for or civil liberties or State privileges. The good news is that, no matter how totalitarian our society becomes, nor even how far down the government tangled rabbit hole we find ourselves, in any moment we can remember who we are and that we are free. Ultimately, real freedom is spiritual. It has something to do with our innermost being, which cannot be chained. Robert Heinlein had a wonderful quote in this regard: "You can't conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him."

Do we not deserve absolute freedom? After all, nature doesn't limit our freedom at all. It is only humans throughout history who have refined control technologies that purport to benefit the whole but upon closer inspection, always really benefit, even more efficiently, just an elite few.

Can government militaries and/or police exist in a free society. No, of course not. Can free societies have governments? No. Government is parasitic. It sucks off the productivity of everyone else. Can you imagine the wondrous things our society could manifest if all the bureaucrats, cops, police, prison workers, judges and attorneys got jobs that were not so detrimental to the whole?

Well, who will protect you then, in a free society? The answer is whoever is protecting you right now, which certainly does not include the government. Did you know, by the way, that the police have no duty to protect individuals? Do you feel comforted when you see a cop in your rear view mirror or do you feel threatened? Do you actually think it reasonable that you can get stopped and handed a monstrous fine when you have not committed any crime, nor done any personal or property damage to anybody? No matter how nice, police (and military) are just government thugs.

Do you think traffic would come to a dangerous standstill without traffic laws and police to enforce them? If so, there's no evidence of that. Would you not adhere to driving custom wherever you live and drive just as safely as you do now even if there was no such thing as a traffic ticket?

Many of you reading this may balk at questioning the need for government, but others of you than who have willingly allowed themselves to become dependent upon government welfare, can you name anything else government has ever done for you? The truth is: our need for government is merely presumed, because our conditioning is so deep. At the age of 12, probably you still relied on your parents, but for most things, you really didn't need them anymore. You have the birthright to be sovereign and free - do you merely presume that you require some outside authority?

Certainly, we have no reason to presume that everything would fall apart if there were no government. We have plenty of reason to presume that everything could run much smoother than it has up until now.

Environmentalists often argue that political freedoms should include some constraint on use of ecosystems; that there should be no such thing as a freedom to pollute. There isn't. No conscious being would shit in it's own nest (and all of nature is our nest) and in a free world, there would naturally be enough peer pressure to keep most of the neighbors from doing so either. At any rate, government certainly hasn't protected us from trashing the Earth; in fact, outside of BP, the U.S. Military is the biggest polluter on the planet.

Many people buy the line that the government is not evil; it is merely inept. That is the picture the media often portrays. Even if this were true, it doesn't speak well for the functions of government.

In case you are one of the many who do so, stop presuming, for a moment, that whatever happens happens through ineptitude; adopt instead the model that most of what happens via government is deliberate and according to plan and that there is professional competence behind almost all actions at least when taking the real agenda, which most likely is hidden, into account. Wow! Everything looks different from here, doesn't it? Quite a bit more sinister, indeed!

No wonder the school system does little more than brainwash kids. No wonder more people die at the hands of AMA doctors than almost any other cause. No wonder the American Dental Association is still extolling the virtues of Mercury Amalgam fillings. No wonder everything is upside down.

No wonder that it is always the trillionaires who control the government who benefit by almost everything that happens, while masses of sheeple continually trade away whatever rights and freedom God may have given them always in exchange for just a little more necessary protection from Big Brother government. The percentage of decent, conscientious people who fear government or some aspect of it in their lives far, far more than anything else that may be in second place is significant and rising.

Isn't it obvious that the sole purpose of government is to control us, not protect us or our rights? Not only is there no need for government, there is no historical evidence that government isn't and hasn't always been an absolute cancer upon human society. We need to outgrow it. Freedom cannot exist in a governed society. It is possible only in an individually self-governed society. Otherwise, whatever it is, it is not freedom.

In a free world, transgressions and mistakes will be made. Without government constraint, effective, natural and creatively organized remedy to any dilemma is always available. It's in the very nature of things.

2. Freedom is the ability to control your own property, starting with your body & mind.

Moral dilemmas arise when someone's property rights come up against else's. They can be easily sorted out by reference to exactly whose property is at stake. A simple question: Whose property is it?

Drugs: It's your body - you can put anything into it that you want.
Taxes: It's your money.
Immigration: Who owns the continent or city where you want to move? No one, so put your body in whatever locale you want.
Discrimination: Hire, work for, associate with anyone you want; don't associate with anyone you don't want.

So-called freedoms from want or hunger or illiteracy or unemployment are all bogus when held under the scrutiny of property rights, which are real human rights.

3. Freedom requires compassion and intelligence and guts.

To be free means to live without coercion or deceit; vulnerable and intimate and real with one's own life and world.

4. We are free.

...As soon as we figure out that who we thought we were, we're not. The cosmic joke is that the goose has always been out of the bottle, in the first place. The only real freedom is freedom from the self, which doesn't really exist. See Awakening, and in particular: I Am That.

5. Freedom is Sacred & Divine.

There is no "greater good" than freedom. To corral Freedom is to profane It. To allow It and to express It in It's totality is our Divine Duty. Ego is a lie. There is only one Self and It's name is Freedom.
